LA CHALLA, LA MIENNE

FRANÇAIS Ce triptyque photographique suit trois étapes de la préparation de la hallah, le pain traditionnel tressé servi lors du Shabbat et des fêtes juives. Chaque vendredi, je prépare ce pain avec attention et émotion. En pétrissant la pâte, je pense aux femmes qui répètent ces gestes depuis des générations, ainsi qu’aux rituels, aux souvenirs et aux traditions transmis par la nourriture. Avant le début du repas, la hallah est déposée sur la table et recouverte d’un tissu brodé — cachée comme un cadeau qui attend son moment. Cette série envisage le pain non seulement comme un aliment, mais aussi comme un vecteur de mémoire, de transmission et d’appartenance. Cette œuvre a été réalisée pour la 14ᵉ édition du Festival International de la Photographie Culinaire à Paris, consacrée en 2023 au thème Le Pain, et présentée dans le cadre de l’exposition officielle du festival.

ENGLISH This photographic triptych follows three stages in the preparation of challah, the traditional braided bread served on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Every Friday, I prepare this bread with attention and emotion. As I knead the dough, I think of the women who have repeated these gestures across generations, and of the rituals, memories and traditions carried through food. Before the meal begins, the challah is placed on the table and covered with an embroidered cloth — hidden like a gift awaiting its moment. The series explores bread not only as food, but as a vessel for memory, transmission and belonging. The work was created for the 14th Festival International de la Photographie Culinaire in Paris, whose 2023 theme was Le Pain, and was presented as part of the festival’s official exhibition.
